General presentation
Bandelier et Jemez Mountains
Troglodytic habitats, tufa canyons and wooded volcanic mountains west of Santa Fe.
Hand Loop Trailer, Alcove House and Jemez Falls give the most telling landmarks of Bander and Jemez Mountains. Together they form a destination where mountain reliefs, forests, volcanic landscapes and heritage meet, with atmospheres that change over the course of the stages rather than just one uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 3 to 6 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: conditions to be checked according to the season. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. Accessibility varies from site to site and deserves to be verified step by step.

Nature and panorama
Bandelier Main Loop Trail
The Bander Main Loop Trail brings together in a short distance the tufa cliffs, the built cavities and the remains of Tyuonyi, an old Pueblo village set in Frijoles Canyon. The alternate path is shaded, short ladders and views of the walls of houses, making it the most telling walk of the monument.

Culture and heritage
Alcove House
Alcove House nests in a vast cavity above Frijoles Canyon, accessible by a series of ladders and bearings hanging on the rock. The arrival in the alcove, with its reconstructed kiva and the emptiness of the canyon before you, gives a more physical sensation of ancestral habitat than the sites seen from the valley bottom.

Nature and panorama
Jemez Falls
Jemez Falls falls into a set of ponderosa pines, volcanic rocks and fresh water, far from the arid landscapes of New Mexico. The short walk to the point of view is mostly in spring or after rain, when the flow really animates the wall and the forest keeps a soft light.

Place indismissible
Valles Caldera
Valles Caldera opens an unexpected landscape of large, round meadows surrounded by the wooded reliefs of the Jemez Mountains. The ancient volcanic crater is discovered by its roads, trails and elk observations, with an atmosphere closer to a high alpine valley than the desert often associated with New Mexico.
