General presentation
Forest of Bowland et Ribble Valley
Hills, valleys, country roads, stone villages and quieter landscapes than the large neighbouring national parks.
Trough of Bowland, Pendle Hill and Clitheroe are the most telling landmarks of Forest of Bowland and Ribble Valley. Together, they make up a destination where the countryside, natural spaces and forests meet, with atmospheres that change over the course of the stages rather than a single uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 2 to 4 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be expected: hill weather and not well adapted without walking. A car is usually the easiest way to connect different sectors. However, some sites require more walking, elevation or preparation.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Panoramic road
Trough of Bowland
Trough of Bowland offers a narrow and winding road between moors, pastures, valleys and walls, in a more discreet area than the large neighbouring national parks. The experience is played in short stops, changes of light and the sensation of entering an open English campaign.

Hill
Pendle Hill
Pendle Hill climbs on a straight slope over the fields and villages of Ribble Valley, with a plateau exposed where the wind quickly reminds that it is on a real hill in Lancashire. The site also keeps echo of the sorcery trials of Pendle, which gives isolated roads and farms a special burden in the covered weather.

Castle
Clitheroe Castle
Clitheroe Castle occupies a small height above the city, with a compact dungeon and generous views of the Ribble Valley. The tour works well as a heritage break between two Bowland landscapes, especially if it also takes time to cross the park and the centre of Clitheroe.

Abbey in ruins
Whalley Abbey
Whalley Abbey preserves peaceful monastic ruins, laid in a stone village at the foot of the Lancashire hills. The site does not need spectacular effects: a few walls, arches, lawns and the quietness of the places are enough to evoke the former Cistercian abbey.
