General presentation
Lake Alakol — Akshi and Koktuma
Alakol is a large endorheic salt lake on the boundary between the Abai and Zhetysu regions, near the Dzungarian Gate. Its name means “motley lake”, and its mineral-rich water has made it a popular place for cures.
On the western shore, the villages of Akshi and Koktuma gather holiday camps and beaches facing the lake, with the Dzungarian Alatau on the horizon. The lake’s islands and the Tentek delta belong to the Alakol nature reserve, known for its bird colonies.
