The notebook of Semey
Discover nature without rushing it.
On the Irtysh, former Semipalatinsk preserves the memory of Dostoevsky, exiled here, and of Abai, a founding figure of Kazakh literature. Museums, riverbanks and the Semey Ormany pine forest make a cultural stop in the north-east.

General presentation
Semey
Founded in 1718 as a fortress on the Irtysh, Semipalatinsk became Semey in 2007 and has been the administrative centre of the Abai region since 2022. The city spreads along both banks of the river.
Fyodor Dostoevsky lived here from 1854 to 1859 after the Omsk penal colony; his house is now a museum. The Abai museum, opened in 1940, and the museum devoted to the Alash leaders and Mukhtar Auezov recall the city’s role in Kazakh culture.
See all
Around the city begin the pine belts of the Semey Ormany forest reserve, on the sands along the Irtysh. Two to three days are enough for the museums, the riverbanks and an outing into the forest.
