General presentation
Tamgaly petroglyphs
The Petroglyphs within the Archaeological Landscape of Tamgaly have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. In a gorge of the Chu-Ili mountains, some 5,000 carvings cover the dark rock faces.
The oldest panels date back to the Bronze Age: hunting scenes, animals, dancing figures and sun-headed figures. Around them, tombs, enclosures and remains of settlements bear witness to the site’s ritual and funerary use.

Rock art site
Tamgaly carved panels
The densest panels are concentrated in the gorge: hunting scenes, animals and figures carved into the dark rock, largely in the Bronze Age. The most famous show sun-headed figures.

Gorge
Tamgaly ravine
This small ravine in the Chu-Ili mountains holds most of the carvings. Its dark rock slopes and steppe vegetation frame the circuit linking the petroglyph groups.

Archaeological necropolis
Bronze Age tombs
Around the carvings, Bronze Age stone tombs and enclosures bear witness to the site’s funerary and ritual use. They are viewed from the circuit without walking on the structures.
