Seek the horizon beyond the climb.
Merzouga is located on the edge of the Chebbi erg, whose dunes form a landscape distinct from the nearby stone plains. Rissani links this discovery to the historical territory of Tafilalet and to Moulay Ali Chérif mausoleum. The exits into the sand require an appropriate organization; neither bivouacs nor off-road movements are presumed to be allowed.

General presentation
Merzouga et l’erg Chebbi
Merzouga is located on the edge of the Chebbi erg, whose dunes form a landscape distinct from the nearby stone plains. Rissani links this discovery to the historical territory of Tafilalet and to Moulay Ali Chérif mausoleum. The exits into the sand require an appropriate organization; neither bivouacs nor off-road movements are presumed to be allowed.
Erg Chebbi, Merzouga and Rissani give the most telling landmarks of Merzouga and the Chebbi erg. Together, they form a destination where desert areas, natural spaces, heritage and the countryside meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than just one uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 3 to 5 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: limit the contour to Rissani, Merzouga and l'erg; confront any east extension to the watch card and local instructions and the selection includes all the Dune Polygon Erg Chebbi, whose south approaches the border band in heightened vigilance on the national map. Risk level used as a precautionary measure; exact limit of vigilance to be specified before any extension or route to the southeast. Tauz and entire border municipalities are excluded. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. However, some sites require more walking, elevation or preparation.

Places worth visiting

Nature
Erg Chebbi
L-erg Chebbi is a set of sand-accumulation dunes at the western end of the Sahara. It stands out from the nearby stone plains and from the Chigaga erg, located in another area of the South of Morocco.

Walk
Merzouga
Merzouga is a village in the southeastern part of Morocco, near the dunes of the Chebbi river. It serves as a basis for their discovery and belongs to a set of villages in Tafilalet; the locality and l-erg must remain two distinct geographical objects.

Heritage
Rissani
Rissani is a town in the Tafilalet region of Erfoud and Chebbi erg. Moulay Ali Chérif is located in his neighbourhood, which links the desert path to the history of settlements and exchanges in southeastern Morocco.

Heritage
Mausolée Moulay Ali Chérif de Rissani
In the Rissani area, the Moulay Ali Cherif mausoleum is a religious and memorial monument of the Tafilalet, within a ksour territory. The spaces open to visitors must be distinguished from the areas reserved for the collection.
