General presentation
Nagano, Togakushi et Jigokudani
Large temple, forest sanctuaries and spa valley of the macaques form a cultural and mountain destination.
Zenkō-ji Temple, Jigokudani Monkey Park and Togakushi Shrine give the most telling landmarks of Nagano, Togakushi and Jigokudani. Together, they form a destination where mountain reliefs, forests, heritage and natural spaces meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than just one uniform decor.

For a stay of 3 to 6 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: conditions to be checked according to the season. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. Accessibility varies from site to site and deserves to be verified step by step.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Temple
Temple Zenkō-ji
Zenkō-ji has been attracting pilgrims for centuries around a Buddhist image held secret. The large door, main hall and dark passage under the altar give a strong ritual visit, extended by temple inns and shopping streets.

Place indismissible
Parc aux singes de Jigokudani
Jigokudani allows you to observe Japanese macaques in a steep valley where they frequent hot springs, especially in winter. Access is via a forest path that can be slippery; the animals remain wild and should not be approached or fed.

Temple
Sanctuaire Togakushi
Togakushi brings together several shrines at the foot of a sacred mountain. The approach of the upper sanctuary passes through a long alley of cedars and then a steeper path, offering a very different forest and spiritual experience of the urban center of Togakushi Nagano.
