General presentation
Nangqên
Khampa valleys, monasteries and isolated canyons occupy the mountainous southeast of Qinghai.
Nangqên Monastery, Zaqu River and Nangqên Canyon give the most telling landmarks of Nangqên. Together, they form a destination where mountain reliefs, riverscapes, heritage and countryside meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than just one uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 2 to 5 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: conditions to be checked according to the season. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. Accessibility varies from site to site and deserves to be verified step by step.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Monastery
Monastère de Nangqên
The monasteries of the valley bear witness to the Buddhist traditions of the northern Kham. The place remains culturally sensitive and discovers with discretion, without hindering local practices; religious timetables, outfit and photographic rules are to be checked on the spot.

River
Rivière Zaqu
The upper Mekong passes through gorges and pastures before reaching Tibet. The season, wind and water level greatly alter the experience; we must also respect the fragile banks and any local restrictions.

Nature and panorama
Canyon de Nangqên
Dry walls frame villages and agricultural terraces in a remote valley. Distances, weather and access conditions must be checked before departure; water, warm clothes and time limits are still useful, even in summer.
