Culture and heritage
Natchitoches Historic District
The Natchitoches Historic District lines Front Street and the Cane River with balconied houses, old brickwork and colourful façades. Exploring the relationship between streets, water and covered galleries reveals an older, more intimate atmosphere than that of Louisiana’s larger cities.

Culture and heritage
Cane River Creole National Historical Park
Cane River Creole National Historical Park is a complex Creole society that brings together the Oakland and Magnolia sites, two former plantations where houses, outbuildings, tools and agricultural landscapes tell of a complex Creole society. The visit addresses cotton, slavery, family owners and workers, keeping the buildings of the daily rather than a simple facade.

Place indismissible
Oakland Plantation
In Oakland Plantation, the buildings conserved tell of the organization of a Creole cotton plantation along Cane River, with main house, outbuildings, workshops and work-related housing. The site, now managed by the National Park Service, gives a concrete view of the very different lives that were in this rural area of the country.

Place indismissible
Melrose Plantation
Melrose Plantation is related to the history of the Creole communities of Cane River and artist Clementine Hunter, whose paintings have transformed the ordinary scenes of the plantation into visual memory. The buildings, including the African House, give the visit a special depth, between architecture, family stories and popular creation.
