General presentation
Ruoqiang, Miran et lisière du Lop Nur
Ruins of Silk Road, modern oasis and saline immensity meet at the borders of Taklamakan.
To understand what Ruoqiang, Miran and Lop Nur border is, you should look at the site side of Miran, Loulan Museum and Lop Nur Deserts. These places give us a view of a territory marked by urban life, desert areas and heritage and allow us to move from emblematic sites to more intimate stages.
See all
For a stay of 2 to 4 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: Lop Nur largely closed or regulated and excursions to be organised with an authorized operator. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. However, some sites require more walking, elevation or preparation.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Archaeological site
Site archéologique de Miran
Miran retains the traces of a fortified oasis where Buddhist shrines, Central Asian paintings of influence and Tibetan occupation are superimposed. The structures are fragile, dispersed and subject to changing access rules; the Ruoqiang Museum helps to understand what the desert only shows in fragments.

Museum
Musée de Loulan à Ruoqiang
The Loulan Museum presents the archaeology of Lop Nur, the old caravan roads and the abandoned settlements when rivers have changed. It is the most realistic access to this heritage: the ruins of Loulan themselves are in a remote, sensitive and not freely accessible area.

Desert
Lisière du Lop Nur
The former Tarim terminal basin forms a saline range whose concentric motifs are mainly readable by aerial and satellite imagery. Since Ruoqiang, only permitted margins can be considered; sensitive installations, skided tracks and total absence of rescue exclude any independent exploration.
