General presentation
Wallis and Futuna
Two groups of volcanic islands associate customary kingdoms, crater lakes, lagoons and remote Polynesian villages.
Notre Dame de l'Assumption Cathedral of Mata-Utu, Lake Lalolalo and Alofi Island give the most telling landmarks of Wallis-et-Futuna. Together, they form a destination where island landscapes, coastline, volcanic landscapes and heritage meet, with atmospheres that change over the course of the stages rather than a single uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 2 to 6 days, a quiet rhythm works well. Also to be anticipated: variable influx depending on the season. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. Accessibility varies from site to site and deserves to be verified step by step.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Cathedral
Notre Dame de l'Assumption Cathedral of Mata Utu
The Cathedral of Notre Dame de l'Assumption of Mata Utu faces the lagoon with its volcanic stone walls and two massive towers. At the religious and administrative centre of Wallis, it gives a glimpse of the importance of Catholicism in the archipelago, between ceremonies, local architecture and the presence of the nearby royal palace.

Lake
Lake Lalolalo
Lake Lalolalo occupies an almost round crater, bordered by steep walls and forest, inside Wallis. From the edge, the dark water appears as a disc, very different from the colors of the lagoon; the site is especially suitable for observation from the arranged points.

Place indismissible
d'Alofi Island
Alofi, a neighbour of Futuna, remains almost uninhabited and preserves beaches, dense forest and sites linked to customary stories. The passage by boat depends on the sea, then the landscape imposes a simple and respectful approach: few developments, lots of vegetation, and an impression of island kept at a distance from everyday life.

Place indismissible
Basilique Saint-Pierre-Chanel
The Basilica of St Peter-Chanel of Poi marks a major pilgrimage to Futuna, linked to the first martyr saint of Oceania. His interest goes beyond the building itself: tombs, ceremonies, missionary memory and local attachment make up a religious group still alive, to be approached with restraint during the services or assemblies.
