Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Historical centre
Wilmington Historic District
The historic centre of Wilmington juxtaposes ancient houses, shade of old oaks and views of Cape Fear River. As you walk along, you slide from a southern architecture to the current life of the docks, with more theatrical respirations in the late afternoon. The neighborhood gives a real idea of the relationship between the shopping town and the river.

River walk
Wilmington Riverwalk
The Wilmington Riverwalk follows Cape Fear River between terraces, docks, boats and views of the USS North Carolina on the other side of the water. The promenade gives the city a very legible river façade, where the harbour past crosses the nighttime usages. When the lights are reflected on the river, the course gains almost theatrical depth.

Garden
Airlie Gardens
Airlie Gardens offers cultivated nature, with fresh alleys, ponds, mosses on oaks and a very typical vegetation of the Atlantic South. The succession of enclosed spaces and more open angles offers a real green break in the middle of coastal heats. It's a very readable choice to get out of the urban noise without leaving Wilmington.

Historical site
Fort Fisher State Historic Site
Fort Fisher occupies a strategic sand tongue between the Atlantic and Cape Fear River, with remains of earth fortifications and a sober interpretation centre. The dunes, wind and proximity to the water explain from the outset why this point controlled access to Wilmington. The site combines military history and coastal landscape without separating them.
