Takayama and Shirakawa-gō
Wood cities, steep-roofed villages, markets and mountains make up a historic region in the heart of the Japanese Alps.
Old town of Takayama, Shirakawa-gō Village and Hida no Sato give the most telling landmarks of Takayama and Shirakawa-gō. Together, they form a destination where urban life, mountain reliefs, heritage and the countryside meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than just one uniform decor.

World Heritage
Villages historiques de Shirakawa-go et Gokayama
Shirakawa-go and Gokayama are famous for their gasshō-zukuri houses with large, inclined, thatched roofs designed to withstand the abundant snow. In the villages of Ogimachi, Ainokura and Suganuma, attices, rice fields and mountains tell a rural life adapted to isolation, with a very different atmosphere between snowy winter and green season.

Old town of Takayama
The former centre of Takayama line up merchant houses, sake breweries and small workshops along dark wooden streets. Morning markets and the banks of the Miyagawa show a still inhabited city, whose interest is not only based on a few preserved facades.

Villaggio
Shirakawa-gō Village
Shirakawa-gō gathers in a valley gasshō-zukuri farms with very steep stubble roofs, designed to withstand snow. A gazebo reveals the organization of the village, then open houses allow to see the structure and the interior uses.

Place indismissible
Hida no Sato
Hida no Sato groups around a pond of rural houses displaced from several mountain valleys. The interiors, fireplaces and artisanal demonstrations give context to the landscapes of the region, in a site easy to reach from Takayama.
