Town or village
Mértola
Mértola clings to a spur at the confluence of Guadiana and Ribeira de Oeiras, under a castle that dominates both valleys. Its streets reveal Roman, Islamic and Christian traces, especially in an ancient mosque that became a church. The descent to the river and the uphill ramparts give the site its full depth.

Cascade and nature
Pulo do Lobo
At Pulo do Lobo, Guadiana tightens sharply between rocky walls before falling into a bubbling corridor. The approach path crosses an austere landscape of garrigue and slabs, then the water noise announces the gully before it is visible. The flow is the most impressive after the rains, when access can also become more difficult.

Industrial heritage
Mina de São Domingos
Mina de São Domingos conserves the ruins of a large copper and sulphur farm, around glowing soils and an old pit filled with acidic water. By walking through the abandoned buildings, roads and earths, we measure the industrial scale that has transformed this isolated corner of the Alentejo. The site is fascinating but fragile: you must stay on the permitted routes and avoid contact with mining water.
