To understand what Ürümqi and Tianchi are, you must look at the Xinjiang Museum, Red Hill and Tian Shan Celestial Lake. These places give us a view of a territory marked by the big city, urban life, mountain reliefs and the shores and lakes and allow us to move from emblematic sites to more intimate stages.

The regional museum brings together textiles, silk road objects and mummies from the Tarim basin. The collections are major, but the official presentation of the Xinjiang must be placed in its political context.

Red Hill
The Red Hill is a dark rock promontory built in park in the centre of Ürümqi. Pagoda, gardens and viewpoints give a quick reading of the city and Tian Shan in clear weather.

Tian Shan Celestial Lake
Tianchi occupies an alpine valley under Bogda peak, between spruce forests and rocky slopes. Shuttles and footbridges concentrate visitors; longer trails allow to get away from the docks.

Grand bazar international
The big bazaar brings together shops, restaurants and monumental architecture in the Erdaoqiao district south of the city Ürümqi. Highly developed and monitored, it should be read as a contemporary commercial showcase rather than as an intact traditional market.
