Usines de la vallée de la Derwent
In the Derwent Valley, cotton mills, canals, workers' housing and Cromford buildings tell of the beginnings of modern industrial production. The site is located at the height of a village as well as through its machines: regular streets, brick, stone and river remind a deeply new organization of work.
Historical area
Chatsworth House
Chatsworth House combines aristocratic residence, collections, gardens and landscaped park in a very composed ensemble on the edge of the Derwent. The interiors are impressive by their richness, but the exterior perspectives, the fountains and the surrounding hills give the estate its true breath.
Bourg
Bakewell
Bakewell is a lively market town, set on the edge of the Wye, with stone bridges, small shops and tea salons. You will be happy to come there between two visits to the Dales, for a more daily break, a few streets easy to walk and an obvious encounter with local gourmetism.
Valley village
Matlock Bath
Matlock Bath occupies a narrow valley with marked relief, with aligned facades, walks on the edge of the Derwent and access to the heights. Its old station atmosphere, a little theatrical, contrasts with the more rural villages of Dales and works well for half a day without too rigid a program.
