Southend Pier is moving far into the Thames estuary, so that the city seems to be gradually detaching behind itself. The walk or the small train gives a simple and very marine experience: wind on the face, bird screams, grey or shiny water depending on the sky, then low horizon at the end of the pier.

Old Leigh
Old Leigh reads like a lively fishing village, with a short but dense main street in detail. The facades, port and local uses give a realistic picture of the estuary coastline. The place really discovers itself by mixing with the flow rather than looking only from the top.
