Tataouine and the ksour
Around Tataouine, ksour and perched villages show how to store crops and live in dry reliefs. Ksar Ould Soltane, Chenini, Douiret and Ksar Hadada offer different forms of this architecture. The route concerns these localities in the northern part of the governorate, without automatic extension to the great south or to the Libyan borders.
To understand what Tataouine and ksour are, you must look to Ksar Ould Soltane, Old village of Chenini and Old village of Douiret. These places give us a territory marked by heritage, mountain reliefs, desert areas and the countryside and allow us to move from emblematic sites to more intimate stages.

For a stay of 2 to 4 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: enhanced vigilance: editorial qualification of the perimeter chosen after France Diplomacy, consulted on 9 September 2026 and conditions of access to monuments and places of worship to be confirmed. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. However, some sites require more walking, elevation or preparation.

Ksar Ouled Soltane
This fortified collective attic is organized around two courtyards lined with vaulted superimposed cells, the ghorfas. Located on a height, it illustrates the protection of agricultural reserves; it also served as a decoration for the Ghost Menace.

Ancien village de Chenini
Near Tataouine, the former Amazigh village of Chenini occupies a height close to the modern agglomeration. Its habitat and fortified attic connect protection needs to relief, in a landscape characteristic of the perched villages of the southeast.

The old Douiret is upstairs under a citadel, with houses dug in the mountain. A white mosque marks the landscape of the village partially ruined; the site allows comparison of troglodytic habitat and fortified storage in the Tataouine region.

Ksar Hadada is a village in southeastern Tunisia known for its attic and for the shooting of the Ghost Menace. It belongs to the ksour circuit around Tataouine; the heritage interest of the building precedes its cinematic use.
