Cape Hatteras' lighthouse, recognizable by its black and white ribbon, dominates a coastline that has long required constant vigilance. From the base, one immediately perceives the logic of its position, between shifting sand banks and changing swell lines. Uphill gives a clear reading of the insularity of Outer Banks.
