Shapotou, Tengger Desert and Zhongwei Gao Temple give the most telling landmarks of Zhongwei and Shapotou. High dunes fall to the Yellow River west of Zhongwei. An early-in-the-day visit allows you to better observe local usages and the details of the place, while avoiding some of the groups and traffic.

The fourth desert of China extends to the northwest of the oasis. Distances, weather and access conditions must be checked before departure; water, warm clothing and time limits remain useful, even in summer.
