General presentation
São Jorge
Long and steep island, famous for its fajãs, hikes, cheeses and views of Pico and Faial.
Fajã dos Cubres, Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo and Velas give the most telling landmarks of São Jorge. Together, they make up a destination where island landscapes, mountain reliefs, coastlines and natural spaces meet, with atmospheres that change over the course of the stages rather than just one uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 3 to 6 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: slow roads and demanding trails. A car is usually the easiest way to connect different sectors. Accessibility varies from site to site and deserves to be checked step by step.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Volcanic landscape
Fajã dos Cubres
The Fajã dos Cubres forms a flat terrace at the foot of the steep cliffs of São Jorge, around a coastal lagoon bordered by pastures. The road plunges into this small isolated world, then the paths allow to observe the houses, the water and the walls almost vertical. The scale contrast is one of the strongest on the island.

Hiking and nature
Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo
Accessed mainly on foot, the Caldeira de Santo Cristo brings together a lagoon, a few houses and a wild coast under the northern cliffs. The trail crosses waterfalls and wet vegetation before reaching this fajã known also for its clams. Isolation rewards effort, but return and weather must be anticipated.

Town or village
Velas et sa côte volcanique
Velas is São Jorge's main gateway, with a sheltered port, an ancient centre with clear facades and lava formations on the ocean's edge. Coastal walks reach natural pools and viewpoints to Pico when clouds rise. It is a pleasant base to find cafes and services after the more isolated trails of the island.
