General presentation
Kawagoe
Former shopping town with land warehouses, temples and shopping alleys, easily accessible from Tokyo.
Kurazukuri District, Kita-in Temple and Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine give the most eloquent landmarks of Kawagoe. Together, they form a destination where urban life, heritage and riverscapes meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than just one uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 1 to 3 days, a quiet rhythm works well. Also to be anticipated: variable influx depending on the season. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. The main sites are generally easy to access.

Place indismissible
Quartier Kurazukuri
Kurazukuri keeps heavy warehouses with fire walls along the former main axis of Kawagoe Behind the dark facades are shops, cafes and small museums, with the bell tower as the sound and visual landmark of the neighborhood.

Temple
Temple Kita-in
Kita-in brings together several buildings linked to Tokugawa shoguns, a garden and five hundred statues of Buddhist disciples with all different expressions. The whole remains relatively peaceful outside the big festivals and allows to approach a story longer than that of the only merchant district.

Temple
Sanctuaire Kawagoe Hikawa
The Hikawa shrine has been associated for centuries with family and marital ties. Its torii alley, ancient trees and small rituals around glass bells give an intimate visit, to be extended by the walk along the Shingashi.
