General presentation
Le Kef et Althiburos
The old town of Kef, which is steeped in the relief of Jebel Dyr, is a dominant kasbah and the sanctuary of Sidi Bou Makhlouf. Further south-east, the ruins of Althiburos extend the historical reading in the Dahmani countryside. The stay combines sloped alleys, religious architecture and archaeology, without including the entire western border.
Old town of Kef, Kasbah of Kef and Mausoleum Sidi Bou Makhlouf give the most telling landmarks of Le Kef and Althiburos. Together, they form a destination where urban life, heritage, mountain reliefs and the countryside meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than just one uniform decor.

For a stay of 2 to 3 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: enhanced vigilance: editorial qualification of the perimeter chosen after France Diplomacy, consulted on 9 September 2026 and conditions of access to monuments and places of worship to be confirmed. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. However, some sites require more walking, elevation or preparation.

Walk
Vieille ville du Kef
The old town of Kef is on the side of the Djebel Dyr. This sloping settlement connects the old districts to the kasbah and shrine of Sidi Bou Makhlouf, in a city important for the history of the Tunisian North West.

Heritage
Kasbah du Kef
The kasbah dominates the city and the surrounding landscapes. This fortification of the Ottoman era was part of the military and administrative control of the territory; its position allows to understand the strategic role of the Kef in the Tunisian interior.

Heritage
Mausolée Sidi Bou Makhlouf
At the foot of the kasbah, the mausoleum houses the burial of the patron saint of the Kef. The ensemble was enlarged in stages around the original sanctuary; it is associated with the Aïssawa Brotherhood and the musical history of the city.

Heritage
Site archéologique d’Althiburos
In the Dahmani region, Althiburos retains the remains of a town of Numid origin, which became Punic then Roman. Its municipal status under Hadrian and its Christian history bear witness to successive transformations, in a landscape today rural.
