General presentation
Mardin
The Mardin stone buildings look at the Mesopotamian plain from a marked slope. Mosques and artuqid madrasas are adjacent to the Syriac heritage of the Deyrulzafaran monastery. Dara extends the route to the ancient borders of the Roman Empire of the East. This heritage is documented without turning the destination into a travel recommendation in the current context.
The discovery of Mardin revolves around the Deyrulzafaran Monastery — Mor Hananyo, the Great Mosque of Mardin and Medersa Zinciriye — Sultan İsa. The stay thus alternates between urban life, heritage and the countryside, which gives a concrete picture of the destination beyond its only best known site.
See all
For a stay of 3 to 4 days, it is better to balance the visits and the travel times. Also to be anticipated: department not recommended unless imperative reason and dara is included; exclude immediate approaches to the Syrian border. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. However, some sites require more walking, elevation or preparation.

Strengths and constraints
Strengths
- Deyrulzafaran Monastery — Mor Hananyo
- Great Mosque of Mardin
- Médersa Zinciriye — Sultan İsa
- Médersa Kasımiye
- Ancient city of Dara
Before you choose
- Department not recommended unless there is a compelling reason.
- Dara is included; exclude immediate approaches to the Syrian border.
- The discovery contour retains entire districts reaching the immediate vicinity of the Syrian border, classified red by France Diplomacy; overall ranking very-high by presence of this portion. Not all urban monuments are in the red zone. Do not extrapolate an unpublished safety kilometric limit.
Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Heritage
Monastère Deyrulzafaran — Mor Hananyo
East of Mardin, Deyrulzafaran is a large Syrian Orthodox monastery, also known as Mor Hananyo. For a long time, it has been a patriarchal seat, and it retains a living religious and cultural importance, distinct from a simple abandoned monument.

Heritage
Grande Mosquée de Mardin
The great mosque of Mardin belongs to the artuqid heritage of the city. Its ribbed dome and minaret dominate the stone constructions of the old quarter. The court and the prayer room organize this religious ensemble.

Heritage
Médersa Zinciriye — Sultan İsa
Finished in 1385 for the Artuqid sovereign Sultan İsa, Zinciriye formed a combination of teaching, prayer and funeral memory. Its courtyards and stone volumes occupy a prominent position in the old town of Mardin.

Heritage
Médersa Kasımiye
Kasımiye is an ancient medrasa of Mardin whose spaces are organized around a courtyard. Its stone architecture and its relationship to the slope complete the discovery of the teaching foundations and religious ensembles of the city.
