General presentation
Marfa, Alpine and Fort Davis
High desert mixing contemporary art, observatory, military heritage and small isolated cities.
Chinati Foundation, Fort Davis National Historic Site and McDonald Observatory provide the most telling landmarks of Marfa, Alpine and Fort Davis. Together, they form a destination where the desert areas, mountain reliefs, heritage and urban life meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than a single uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 3 to 6 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: conditions to be checked according to the season. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. The main sites are generally easy to access.

The Chinati Foundation installs contemporary art in the buildings and grounds of an old military base of Marfa According to Donald Judd's vision, permanent works, including concrete volumes and Dan Flavin's pieces, play with space, desert light and slow eyes.

Culture and heritage
Fort Davis National Historic Site
Fort Davis National Historic Site maintains the buildings of a military post at the foot of the Davis Mountains, with barracks, officer quarters and parade grounds. The site tells about road protection, border tensions and the presence of Buffalo Soldiers, in a very evocative dry hill setting.

Culture and heritage
McDonald Observatory
The McDonald Observatory takes advantage of the dark skies of the Davis Mountains to open astronomy to the public, between domes, telescopes and evenings of observation. The night programmes are the most memorable: constellations, planets and Milky Way appear with a sharpness difficult to find near the big cities.

Place indismissible
Marfa Lights Viewing Area
The Marfa Lights Viewing Area is a simple stop in front of the desert horizon, designed to watch the mysterious lights associated with Marfa. Whether they come from glamours, distant lighthouses or something else in the local imagination, the experience lies in the night wait, the silence and the depth of the landscape.
