General presentation
Mount St. Helens
Frozen volcano, eruption landscapes and lava caves.
The discovery of Mount St. Helens is built around Johnston Ridge, Ape Cave and Spirit Lake. The stay thus alternates between volcanic landscapes, mountain reliefs and natural spaces, giving a concrete picture of the destination beyond its only best known site.
See all
For a stay of 2 to 5 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: conditions to be checked according to the season. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. Accessibility varies from site to site and deserves to be verified step by step.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Nature and panorama
Johnston Ridge
From Johnston Ridge, Mount St. Helens appears frontally, with its open crater, grey flows and the valley of the All still marked by eruption. The site gives a very concrete reading of volcanic breath: lying trunks, bare slopes, back-up vegetation and wide view of the blast zone.

Place indismissible
Ape Cave
Ape Cave plunges into an ancient lava tunnel, cold and dark, where the black rock forms a natural corridor under the forest. The visit completely changes the rhythm of Mount St. Helens: lamp in hand, one advances between rough walls, fallen blocks and low passages, with an atmosphere more underground than panoramic.

Nature and landscape
Spirit Lake
Spirit Lake tells of the eruption other than by the crater: its banks have been shaken, and floating trunks still remind the wave of debris coming down from the mountain. The lake is especially seen from the high points, where the water, the forest and the slopes of the volcano make up a beautiful and disturbing landscape.

Nature and panorama
Windy Ridge
Windy Ridge offers one of the most direct views of Spirit Lake and the north face of Mount St. Helens. The road leading to it runs through razed forests, stone fields and slopes still open by the eruption; in clear weather, the final platform gives a striking impression of proximity to the volcano.
