General presentation
Saaremaa et Kuressaare
Large island of mills, craters, cliffs and quiet roads around the thermal town of Kuressaare.
Kuressaare Castle, Kaali Crater and Sõrve Lighthouse give the most telling landmarks of Saaremaa and Kuressaare. Together, they form a destination where island landscapes, coastline, heritage and natural spaces meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than a single uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 4 to 8 days, a quiet rhythm works well. Also to be anticipated: conditions to be checked according to the season. A car is usually the easiest way to connect different sectors. Accessibility varies from site to site and deserves to be checked step by step.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Castle
Château de Kuressaare
The Kuressaare Castle retains a complete medieval silhouette, with moat, thick towers and inner courtyard facing the bay. Its museum rooms add to the stone decor stories about Saaremaa, bishops, wars and island life.

Place indismissible
Cratère de Kaali
In Kaali, a dark water circle occupies the background of a meteorite crater surrounded by trees, in a stranger than spectacular atmosphere. The site is especially valid for this rare face-to-face between an ancient cosmic event and a very simple rural landscape.

Lighthouse
Phare de Sõrve
The Sõrve lighthouse marks the tapered end of the Saaremaa, where the road seems to end between two masses of water. In clear weather, the Irbe Strait opens widely; at the migration seasons, the passage of birds adds a constant movement to the landscape.

Place indismissible
Falaise de Panga
The cliff of Panga clearly cuts the northern edge of Saaremaa The site changes rapidly according to the light: light edges in the sun, grasses lying by the wind, dark lines of the forest behind the edge.
