General presentation
Trabzon and the Pontic Mountains
Trabzon combines the heritage of Trébizonde with excursions to the wooded valleys of the Pontic Mountains. St.Sophie and the historic residences are visited in the city; Sümela occupies a cliff of the Altındere and Uzungöl a more oriental mountain basin. Distances and weather require that these three discovery areas be separated.
St.Sophie de Trabzon, Sümela Monastery and Trabzon Atatürk Pavilion give the most telling landmarks of Trabzon and the Pontical Mountains. Together, they form a destination where urban life, the coastline, heritage and mountain reliefs meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than just one uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 3 to 5 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: enhanced vigilance and maçka and Uzungöl are two different excursions. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. However, some sites require more walking, elevation or preparation.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Heritage
Sainte-Sophie de Trabzon
This ancient 13th century church belongs to the heritage of the Trebizonde Empire. It became a mosque, then a museum and a new Muslim place of worship, and preserved remarkable Byzantine architecture near the western coast of the city.
Heritage
Sümela Monastery
Sümela is a former Greek Orthodox monastery on the Pontic Mountains, and is located on the Altındere valley. Its location combines rocky buildings and cavities, in a forest environment that is an integral part of the discovery.

Museum
Pavillon Atatürk de Trabzon
Soğuksu Pavilion is a historic residence associated with Atatürk's stays in Trabzon. Located on the heights of the city, it has a republican memory distinct from that of the Trabzon museum in Kostaki mansion.

Nature
Lake and village of Uzungöl
In the district of Çaykara, Uzungöl occupies a mountainous valley where a landslide has barred a stream. The lake, the village and the forest slopes make up a landscape that is now strongly marked by tourism.
