Downpatrick and Castlewellan
Heritage linked to Saint Patrick, forest, lake and gentle transition to the Murne Mountains.
Downpatrick, Castlewellan Forest Park and Saint Patrick Centre give the most telling landmarks of Downpatrick and Castlewellan. Together, they form a destination where heritage, forests, shores and lakes and the countryside meet, with atmospheres that change over the course of the stages rather than just one uniform decor.

For a stay of 1 to 3 days, a quiet rhythm works well. To anticipate also: rather complementary to the Mourns and short stay. A car is usually the easiest way to connect different sectors. Accessibility varies from site to site and deserves to be checked step by step.

Historical city
Downpatrick
Downpatrick combines small town streets, Saint Patrick's memory and gentle landscapes of County Down. The cathedral, museums and surroundings give a sober but dense visit, interesting to put the nearby sites back into a wider history, without losing contact with the local daily life.
Foret and lake
Castlewellan Forest Park
Castlewellan Forest Park combines a large lake, accessible woods and an arboretum that changes significantly according to the season. The trails are suitable for a family walk as well as a longer walk, with the Mourne Mountains in the background when the sky clears.
Mountain panorama
Newcastle et Slieve Donard
In Newcastle, the seaside promenade is directly backed by the slopes of Slieve Donard, creating a rare contrast between seaside resort and mountain. Travellers can stay on the docks and the beach, or aim to climb, more demanding, to embrace the coast and the Murne Mountains.
