Lake Markakol
Markakol is the largest lake in the Kazakh Altai. Fed by many streams, it drains through the Kalzhyr towards the Irtysh, amid mountains covered with larch and meadows.
Markakol nature reserve, founded in 1976, protects more than 700 species of higher plants and varied mountain wildlife, from maral deer to grouse. On the southern shore, the village of Urunkhayka and the outline of Samovar mountain are the most accessible landmarks.
