Anchorage Museum
The Anchorage Museum approaches Alaska through art, science, Aboriginal objects and transformations of the contemporary North. Its galleries mix parkas, masks, photographs, installations and environmental stories; it is one of the best places in Anchorage to go beyond the image of large spaces and also look at urban Arctic life.

Tony Knowles Coastal Trail
The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail along the water from the centre of Anchorage towards the woods of Kincaid, with views of Cook Inlet, mudflats and mountains when the sky emerges. On foot or by bike, the course gives a rare feeling of wild edge to the immediate exit of the city.

Alaska Native Heritage Center
The Alaska Native Heritage Center presents the state's Aboriginal cultures through traditional lake houses, demonstrations, stories and objects. The visit is more powerful when speakers explain the uses, languages or dances, because the place favours living transmission rather than a simple showcase.

Flattop Mountain
Flattop Mountain is the classic hiking Anchorage : a short but steep climb towards a flat summit of the Chugach, with the city, Cook Inlet and sometimes Denali in the axis of the look. The final terrain can be stony and slippery, but the quick access makes it a very legible escape from the urban districts.
