The Mahdia peninsula keeps the traces of the Fatimid capital around the Skifa Kahla, its large mosque and the Ottoman fort. In the interior, El Jem changes scale with its Roman amphitheater and museum. This association links a fortified maritime city to the ancient riches of the agricultural Sahel.
Skifa Kahla, Bab Zouila, Mahdia Great Mosque and Borj El Kebir of Mahdia give the most telling landmarks of Mahdia and El Jem. Together, they form a destination where urban life, the coast, the heritage and the countryside meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than a single uniform decor.

The Skifa Kahla is a fortified gate inherited from the defenses of the Fatimid Mahdia. It is one of the major remains of the old enclosure and still marks the passage to the historic centre of the peninsula.

Great Mosque of Mahdia
Founded during the creation of the Fatimid capital in the 10th century, the great mosque was largely rebuilt by archaeologists in the 20th century. Its preserved entrance façade makes it possible to distinguish the ancient monument from its modern restitutions.

Borj El Kebir de Mahdia
This Ottoman fortress of the sixteenth century stands on the peninsula of Mahdia, in the location of an ancient Fatimid palace. Its courtyard, vaulted rooms and bastions illustrate a different stage of urban defence from the Skifa Kahla.

The amphitheatre of El Jem dominates the present city, heiress of the ancient Thysdrus. This large Roman performance building is a World Heritage site, with its oval plan and preserved structures giving a concrete reading of the organization of ancient games.
