Roman wall, archaeological forts, grassy ridges and open landscapes between Northumberland and Cumbria.
To understand what Hadrian's Wall Country is, look at Housesteads Roman Fort, Vindolanda and Sycamore Gap. These places give us the opportunity to see a territory marked by heritage, countryside and natural spaces and allow us to move from emblematic sites to more intimate stages.

For a stay of 2 to 5 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: exposed trails and poorly adapted without walking. A car is usually the easiest way to connect different sectors. However, some sites require more walking, elevation or preparation.

The Frontières of the Roman Empire group walls, ditches, forts, towers and camps that materialized the limits of Roman power. In the Hadrian Wall country, these vestiges take on a particular force on the ridges of northern England, where stone, wind and horizons open make military strategy very visible.

The Hadrian wall crosses the north of England following ridges, pastures and valleys, with sections of wall, strong and still well-marked doors. Around Housesteads, Vindolanda or Steel Rigg, the walk gives the measure of this Roman border, especially when the stone follows the reliefs at the bottom of the sky.

Housesteads Roman Fort is part of a continuity of land and wall that forces the march to slow down. The site and its surroundings form a coherent whole: walls, ditches and valleys give a strategic reading of the course.
Archaeological site
Vindolanda
Vindolanda gives flesh to the Roman world through its foundations, its visible excavations and its museum rich in everyday objects. The written tablets, shoes and remains of barracks make the site surprisingly close, especially if it takes time to connect the windows to the ruins outside.
