General presentation
Cyrène et Apollonia
On the heights of Jebel Akhdar, Cyrene retains ancient shrines and neighborhoods linked to Greek colonization. Apollonia allows you to understand its maritime outlet, while Qasr Libya takes a look at the Byzantine mosaics. These scattered sites make up a historic crossing from the plateau to the coast, without any guarantee of access at present.
Cyrene, Cyrenaic Apollonia and Qasr Libya and its mosaics give the most telling landmarks of Cyrene and Apollonia. Together, they form a destination where mountain reliefs, coastline and heritage meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than a single uniform decor.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Heritage
Cyrène
Founded by Greek settlers, Cyrene occupies a height of the Jebel Akhdar near Shahhat. Its shrines, theatres and other remains form a vast archaeological complex on the plateau, of which Apollonia was the maritime outlet.

Heritage
Apollonia de Cyrénaïque
Apollonia, near the present-day Suse, was the port of Cyrene before becoming an autonomous urban centre. Its Greek, Roman and then Byzantine history explains the importance of the exchanges between the Mediterranean coast and the heights of the Cyrenaic.

Museum
Qasr Libya et ses mosaïques
Qasr Libya corresponds to the ancient Olbia, also called Theodorias. The site is known for a collection of Byzantine mosaics preserved in a museum; it complements Greek and Roman history with other stages of the area.

Heritage
Temple de Zeus à Cyrène
The temple of Zeus was a great doric shrine of Cyrene. Several destructions and reconstructions have changed its state during the antiquity; its study allows to distinguish the initial architecture from the later transformations of the monument.
