General presentation
Kumamoto et mont Aso
Rebuilt castle, historic garden and huge volcanic caldera make up an urban and natural destination in the centre of Kyūshū.
Kumamoto Castle, Aso Mount and Suizen-ji Garden Jōju-en give the most telling landmarks of Kumamoto and Aso Mount. Together, they form a destination where urban life, mountain reliefs, volcanic landscapes and heritage meet, with atmospheres that change over the course of the stages rather than a single uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 3 to 6 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: conditions to be checked according to the season. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. The main sites are generally easy to access.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Remarkable location
Kyūshū
Kyūshū concentrates a very volcanic and southern part of Japan, between the fumoils of Aso, the hot springs of Beppu, the forests of Yakushima and the open ports to Asia. From Kumamoto, the island lives in stages rather than in a straight line, with journey times often dictated by terrain and weather.

Remarkable location
Mont Unzen
Mount Unzen recalls that the Kyūshū volcanoism remains active, with wooded slopes, lava fields and sulphur vapours from Unzen Jigoku near the hot springs. In clear weather, the viewpoints open towards Shimabara Bay; after rain or fog, the trails can become much less legible.

Castle
Château de Kumamoto
Kumamoto Castle dominates the city with its high stone walls and dark towers. The restorations carried out after the earthquakes make reconstruction techniques visible, while the route explains the defensive organization of one of the great Japanese fortresses.

Place indismissible
Mont Aso
Mount Aso occupies a huge inhabited caldeira, crossing roads, pastures and volcanic cones. Access to the active crater depends on the gas and activity of the moment, but the plateaus and viewpoints retain their interest even when the sommital zone closes.
