General presentation
Nikkō
Sculpted shrines, high-altitude lake, waterfalls and cedar forests form a dense cultural and natural region north of Tokyo.
Nikkō Tōshō-gū Sanctuary, Chūzenji Lake and Kegon Falls give Nikkō's most telling landmarks. Together, they form a destination where heritage, forests, mountain reliefs and shores and lakes meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than just one uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 2 to 5 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: conditions to be checked according to the season. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. Accessibility varies from site to site and deserves to be verified step by step.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Temple
Nikkō Tōshō-gū Shrine
Tōshō-gū spreads in a cedar forest a profusion of carved wood, lacquers and gilding around the Tokugawa Ieyasu mausoleum. Animal details, monumental doors and stairs give a very dense visit that takes more time than the compact enclosure suggests.

Lake
Lake Chūzenji
Lake Chūzenji occupies a volcanic plateau above Nikkō, surrounded by mountains and forests. Its shores offer walks, views of Mount Nantai and a much cooler atmosphere than the shrines, especially marked during autumn colors.

Waterfall
Chutes de Kegon
Kegon Falls bring the waters of Lake Chūzenji down into a dark wall, with several secondary nets visible depending on the season. A top lookout gives an initial view, while an elevator descends to a platform that better reveals height and sprays.
