General presentation
Yakushima
A very watery mountain island, covered with ancient forests, rivers and demanding trails south of Kyūshū.
Jōmon Sugi, Ravin Shiratani Unsui and Yakushima National Park give the most telling landmarks of Yakushima. Together, they form a destination where island landscapes, forests, mountain reliefs and natural spaces meet, with atmospheres that change over the stages rather than just one uniform decor.
See all
For a stay of 4 to 8 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: conditions to be checked according to the season. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. Accessibility varies from site to site and deserves to be verified step by step.

Places worth visiting
A selection to start dreaming and organizing the stay — not an exhaustive list of everything there is to see.

Place indismissible
Jōmon Sugi
Jōmon Sugi is a very old cedar located at the end of a long hike in the mountainous interior of Yakushima. The route follows old forest tracks, bridges and wet slopes, making the approach as important as the tree itself.

Place indismissible
Ravin Shiratani Unsui
Shiratani Unsui crosses a forest of cedars, mosses, blocks and streams above Miyanoura. Several loops allow to adapt the effort, but the rain makes roots and stones slippery and at the same time gives the undergrowth its deepest light.

Nature park
Parc national de Yakushima
The National Park protects the high mountains, old forests and coastal portions of the Yakushima. Rapid changes in altitude create very different environments, from the beaches frequented by turtles to ridges often caught in clouds.
