In the south of the Shott al-Jerid, Douz and Kebili anchor the discovery in the Nafzawa and its Os`an settlements. The large salt basin offers a very different landscape depending on water and season, while Douz marks the threshold of Saharan spaces. This area remains limited to towns, roads and the desert's authorized approaches.
To understand what Douz, Kebili and the Shott al-Jerid are, you must look to Douz, Shott al-Jerid, from the Nafzawa and Kebili. These places give a view of a territory marked by desert expanses, shores and lakes, the countryside and natural spaces and allow to move from emblematic sites to more intimate stages.

For a stay of 2 to 4 days, it is better to balance visits and travel times. Also to be anticipated: enhanced vigilance: editorial qualification of the perimeter chosen after France Diplomacy, consulted on 9 September 2026 and conditions of access to monuments and places of worship to be confirmed. A car is usually the easiest way to connect the different sectors. However, some sites require more walking, elevation or preparation.

Douz is a town in Nefzaoua, south of the Shout al-Jérid, often presented as a gate to the Sahara. It offers an urban anchor to understand the transition between the Osian settlements and the neighbouring desert spaces.

Seen from the entrances of Kebili and Douz, the Shout al-Jerid marks the boundary between the Os`an settlements and a vast salt depression. Its condition varies with water intakes; the surface must never be assimilated to stable terrain.

Kebili is one of the main towns of Nefzawa, near the Shott al-Jerid. Its situation makes it a useful step in understanding the organisation of establishments in the South Tunisian region and in linking the landscapes of the salt basin to the Douz region.
